Web databases
These demonstrations have been created to show the way in which DBMS Computer
Systems can enable you to access data using a standard Web browser. As
small, low volume examples they are running as MS Access databases, for
larger applications a different database engine would probably be required.
Like all busy solution providers our clients are more important than
our own site, so please forgive us if some of the options do not work.
They will, when we arrive at the time slot allocated and do some more
work on them.
Web Data applications are used on the Internet for general access to
data or on Intranets for restricted internal access to company information.
Every application requires a different solution to getting information
from the data but we have put together some examples. In some cases
the data was already available and being used for other purposes. In
one case the data had been collected for many years and was not being
exploited.
These are not full applications, just ideas to whet your appetite.
The data is test data from clients and is their copyright and may not
be used or reproduced in any way and if you want to try these demonstrations
you will need a login from us.
Converting data to information
This database was originally designed to store information about repair
and maintenance work done on different buildings for clients and is
used for invoicing.
The pages demonstrate the process of extracting information from such
a database using simple forms. By making these query forms accessible
via the Internet the organisations customers can now access the
database via their Web browser and keep in touch with the work being
done on their buildings.
The maintenance company now has a leading edge advantage over their
competitors who are not able to satisfy this client need.
This is another example of converting basic data to useful information
and extracting the maximum commercial advantage from it.
Online Operations Manual
An organisation has an Operations Manual produced centrally as a Word
document which contains information and forms to be completed in certain
situations.
The manual is constantly revised and there was a problem of keeping
the printed user copies up to date. In addition, information about specific
questions that the users had was difficult to find within the hard copy
manual.
By converting The Operations Manual to an intranet application the users
can search for information using their Web browser and forms can be
completed on line and printed locally. In addition, each form has been
designed with links to Help that is specific to the section of the form
being completed.
The application stores all of the information about the forms and the
help associated with them within a database which builds the Web site
using the latest versions of the forms.
Open Access Hints and Tips
The Hints and Tips database originally existed as an archived Open Access
database.
We simply converted it to an Access database and then designed a search
form to access it.
